Why
Host Your Web Site With Us? | Why
UNIX?
A web server
is a "program that runs all the time and waits for
web clients (such as Navigator or Internet Explorer
) to connect to it and request data, usually a file.
Servers and browsers communicate using the HyperText
Transfer Protocol (HTTP), a language created for transferring
hypertext documents over the Web. Web servers are
often called HTTPD servers".
Note: The "D"
in HTTPD stands for daemon. A daemon is a UNIX term
for a program that sits in the background and waits for
requests. You don't have to be on UNIX for a program
to behave like a daemon, so Web servers on any platform
are still called HTTPD servers, or simply HTTP servers.
Why
Host Your Web Site With Us
The best
web servers reside on high performance UNIX computer workstations
with high speed connections (on ramps) to the Internet.
Where these computers reside is a matter of choice.
One needs to make the make/buy decision. Or
in other words, do I want to manage all the hardware, software
and maintenance activities of my web server or should I
lease web space from a host provider.
Many small to medium sized businesses
contemplate installing and maintaining a dedicated Internet
connection at their office believing it is the only way
to establish a powerful Internet presence.
Typically
however, these businesses do not realize (at least initially)
how expensive a dedicated solution can be. The following
table presents this type of solution and the corresponding
costs.
